Smile Nikon 300 2.8 with TC 2.0 - 08-10-2009, 08:45 AM

I currently have a AFS 300 2.8 D lens (very sharp). A friend is offering to sell me his 2.0 TC. Looking for input regarding:

1. Loss of sharpness?
2. Concerned about darkness in the viewfinder

Anyone out there shoot with this combo?

Thanks.

IMHO, this is about the only lens that can produce decent images with the 2X. I think it is virtually worthless on all others. A few years back there was a guy on another forum that consistantly posted images taken with this combo that were excellent. Based on this, I bought one for use on my 300 f4 AF-S (which provides excellent images with the 1.4 and 1.7). Images were completely unacceptable.

If you can borrow it and make some test images before you buy, I would try it and see what you can do with it. Hope it works out!

The 2x is amazing with the 200/2 and 400/2.8; slightly less so with the 300/2.8 though still excellent. Those are the three lenses that it works really well with, IMHO.

Bill has indeed shot them all. Take his word as gospel truth.

I have tinkered around with both 1.4 and 1.7 versions and have opted to use neither. Then again I'm a picky SOB... YMMV, but a test run would be well worth it IMHO.
