Question D90 Focusing Problems... - 08-17-2009, 02:50 PM

I'm having an issue with my D90, and the auto focus abilities. Somehow or another I've gotten it to do some sort of 'tracking' if you will. I can focus on a subject, but then if I move my camera it automatically focuses on something closer, even if I keep the shutter button half way pressed which should keep the focus locked if I am not mistaken.

I've gone into the menu and changed the auto focus area from single to wide, and changed just about every other setting I can find, and can't seem to figure it out.

Is there a way to choose one of the 11 points as a focus area, such as only the very center 'square'?

Sounds like you have it on AI Servo, you need to set it to One Shot focusing. At least that's what the settings are called on Canons. Read the manual to find out for sure.

There is a switch by your left hand near the lens marked M/S/C for manual/single/continuous focus. Make sure you did not move it into continuous by mistake. I've done that before.

You have the camera set to AF-C (Continuous Focus) need to set it to AF-S (Single Focus)...

Note: I always set my focus to the AE-L/AE-F....I set this up in the menu to be the focusing button...so if I want to focus on a spot and move the camera around I don't have to worry about the focus changing on me when I depress the shutter button...

Hope this helps...

This is not the first issue I've read about this and the D90.

Check if are in AF-C or AF-S. It will be viewable on the top display.

Let us know if this fixes it.

That is your problem...AF-A (Auto C-S Mode) lets the camera choose the mode...AF-C or AF-S....I would do the AF-S mode or use the AE-L/AE-F button for focusing...so you don't have to worry about this...

ok... Its back on AF-S... haven't a clue how it got changed. However its still using the 11 point focus area. Isn't there a way to use a single point?

There should be a way to choose a single focus point.

Got it!

And I figured out how to set the AF-L button too... now I can use it to focus instead of the shutter button!
