Setting up Home Studio - Is this a good list of items to buy? - 10-03-2009, 06:07 PM

I am talking to a local photographer who is selling some of her things. This is the list of things that she has that I am considering buying.

What would be a fair price for these items? Do you think these would be help build a good set up?

TIA!

3 Digi Popper Lights - 4 years old but only used indoors

2 Air cushioned light stands

3 Standard Umbrellas

1 Small Umbrella

1 Softbox type umbrella

Camera Tripod

2 Background Stands

1 Muslin (about 10-12' wide by about 20' long)

2 Small canvas backgrounds about 5'x 10'

Good set up? What would be a fair price?

• 3 Digi Popper Lights - 4 years old but only used indoors
Not sure of what this really is..... (????)

• 2 Air cushioned light stands
Depends on Manufacture and Height of Stands ($25.oo-$75.oo EA.)

• 3 Standard Umbrellas
Depends on Manufacture and Size of Umbrellas ($25.oo-$50.oo EA.)

• 1 Small Umbrella
See Above..... ($10.oo-$25.oo)

• 1 Softbox type umbrella
See Above..... ($25.oo-$75.oo)

• Camera Tripod
Depends on Manufacture and Features ($25.oo-$400.oo)

• 2 Background Stands
Depends on Manufacture, Features, Height and Width. And when you say "Background Stands", I'm assuming you mean with the Cross Bar...... ($50.oo-$100.oo Set)
If you mean "Background Stands" as in small or short background stands..... ($10.oo-$25.oo EA.)

• 1 Muslin (about 10-12' wide by about 20' long)
Depends on Manufacture, Design of Muslin, and whether it is a "TRUE" Muslin or a sheet..... There is a "HUGE" difference! ($50.oo-$200.oo)

• 2 Small canvas backgrounds about 5'x 10'
See Above..... ($50.oo-$100.oo EA.)

There are simply too many variables in the equipment you're planning on purchasing, but if you were able to give a couple more details on the items, that would help, but I included a few fair "Used Market" Retail Prices, but again, it all comes down to the Manufactures Brands, Features, and Sizes of most of these items.....

Mark- Thanks so much for your feedback! I too don't know alot of the exact details as far as make and such, but looking at your ranges I would guess that I would be getting a good deal. She said she is looking to get $275-$300 for the lot.

Growing up in Michigan we had a studio that did all of our family pictures called "The Loft" it litterally was a huge loft at the top of this other building. Too funny :)

Any more opinions on the topic such as price or set up? I asked this person some more questions and will post more details as I have them.

$300.00 does seem like a pretty good deal even if all of the equipment was "Off Brand" Manufactures.

Sound like a deal for a working set of lights alone.

I agree with Mark and Rob, Neena. Go for it. If everything is in working/functional condition, you really can't go wrong at that price.

Flashpoint Digipopper? That's not a bad starter type of light. It shows to be discontinued, but I found the feedback link for it that also has a pic and some info.

http://www.adorama.com/Reviews/pwr/p...Monolight.html

The one in this link is the 200 w/s size. They made larger and possibly smaller sizes as well. Make sure those have user replaceable tubes. Being four years old, you don't want to have to throw them away when the tubes go out on you. Overall, you're getting an excellent deal here.

Yes Elan, They are those lights but size 300. I just got them home and they work great! Not just to learn how to use them properly! They each have a working bulb and she gave me 2 extras. Good call on checking to see if they still make them. Just incase I should buy some if they do.

Thanks everyone on your feed back. Now off to scour the threads on how to set up an in home studio!

If these are 300's, then you made out like a bandit here! I was referring to the flash bulbs btw, not the modeling bulbs. But the size answers that as well. All 300 w/s monolights have replaceable flash bulbs. Replacements will not be a problem either. Flash bulbs are fairly generic and usually shared by several manufacturers.
