Oh ooh .. Broken Flash Bulb - 10-13-2009, 10:16 AM

Yesterday while measuring the output of the light of my 550ex flash strobe, I heard a "POP" ... and the flash stopped working. When I moved the flash a little I heard some rattling inside of the unit ... like the broken filament of an old incandescent light bulb. Sending off to Canon for repair. Just curious though if anyone has ever been able to replace the flash tube themselves on strobes ? Thfat is if the tubes are replaceable. I have been repairing laser equipment with similar (higher voltage) flash tubes on lasers for years, so the technology/functions are very similar. (capacitor discharge through a flash-tube) Anyway, just a curious thought.

I imagine if people can replace the shoe, you can do the tube. The xenon tube itself is part no. Y17-3159-000, link to a site with a download-able PDF parts blow-up.

Dan -

Perfect ! I sent it to Canon this time for repair. If I need to do this again in the future, I'll consider trying to replace the tube ...that is, if I can obtain the Xenon tube. Thanks for the link.
