The D3s is no big surprise, there's been lots of talk about it lately. I didn't expect the 1.2x crop mode, I'm not sure I see the benefit since it doesn't increase the frame-rate. The D3s will freshen the product line, but there's no reason for D3 users to upgrade unless they have to have video.

The accompanying lens announcement is a huge disappointment. 85mm DX macro lens? Who the heck wants that, there are plenty of great macro lenses already on the market. Rumors were running rampant the last few weeks about a new 16-35mm f/4 and 24mm f/1.4, both of which would be big hits. Sometimes I can't help but wonder about the marketing decisions Nikon makes...

Because they make still cameras not video cameras?

Hey camera mfgrs, quit driving up the prices on good DSLRs by adding unnecessary features, please.

Hmmmmm.....ISO 102,400 capability. I've only used ISO 25,600 a few times, and it was out of sheer desperation. The video doesn't mean anything to me, but it would be interesting to see what the redesigned sensor does.

Sensor cleaning and quiet shutter mode - could be interesting.

I'm a little surprised at the lack of 1080p and variable frame rates like 60p.
Although I almost always output video (I'm talking home movies here) at 720p, it's nice being able to crop into scenes with 1080p and still be able to output at 720 without up-converting the clips.

As far as video being an unnecessary features. I think at this stage in the game if a camera manufacturer didn't offer video in it's pro line, they would be at a big disadvantage.
If I was a PJ shooter, I would definitely be learning everything I could about video and only buy a camera that offered it.

No kidding - its expensive per upgrade features.

You could also say same for D7 {50% more than previous D50}.

In short, they both play on the marketing frenzy of upgrade
and the 21st century digital dogma photographer.

At least Nikon does not cram too small sensors in the D3.

Its a Mad Mad World that has come to photography !!

The quiet mode seems to be the same thing that Canon has had for years. And is very useful in the right situations. It won't make the camera silent, but being able to control when the mirror resets can be very helpful.

And from the sample shots the 102,400 ISO looks like 800 ISO on the D2H.

I'd rather have a camera that can crank out the ridiculously beautiful high ISO the D3s can than stupid movie features.

PHOTOGRAPHY, not video.

You could not be more correct. As more PJ work migrates to the web, the more demand there is for video. The Canon 5D Mk II is not a top level pro camera, yet it was scooped up by many PJs simply because of the video capabilities. True enough, a still camera may not be ergonomically the best equipment for shooting video, but it beats carrying around a video camera and two still bodies.

Though I am not a Nikon shooter, I am waiting for the arrival of Canon's 1D Mk IV for the video. (Of course, I'll have to figure out how to afford one as well. )
