white balance lens cap - 10-26-2009, 02:43 PM

Has anyone use "white balance lens cap"? How do you like it?

I've been using a paper gray card, which is doing fine. While trying to find something more durable, I found "white balance lens cap" on Ebay sell for under $5.00 with different sizes.

Are they any good? anyone?

I think it's worth to spend a little extra money and get something sturdy and dependable: http://www.rawworkflow.com/whibal/

Yes, agreed with that.

Just want to hear feedback from someone who actually use it. Money is not the issue if it works well. Some white balance lens cap could cost $50~$80.

I've used the BRNO balens. It's more like $55, though. It works great. I use it to help me adjust color temp. in camera.

I use the Photovision 14" calibration target, and swear by it. It's even got a small reflector on the other side, and it triple folds to fit in just about any camera case. Folded up it's about 6" around. And it comes with an instructional dvd that shows you a bunch of different ways to use it.

I wouldn't trust the cheap ebay ones. JMHO

ExpoDisc is another one. Just by the largest size you will ever need (77mm for me) and hold in front of smaller lenses that aren't 77mm.

What advantage do you see with the 14" vs. the smaller 6". I watched a few intros to his educational dvds and saw him use the 6" on a couple of occasions. I plan on ordering one (especially while they are on sale), just can't decide on size. thanks in advance!

I bought the 6 dollar ebay special. I calibrates ok....but I found that the camera does just as good of job. I have a D300.

I ran tests between what it calibrated to and what the camera read on auto WB...it was about the same sometimes more dead on through the d300

If you actually want to have a small reflector to put a bit of light on faces and similar stuff, I figured a 6" reflector would be too small, but the 14" is actually large enough that it's not like a flashlight in the face. And it folds up to 6". Otherwise the function as a calibration tool is the same.
