Canon 430 EX Problem - 10-27-2009, 07:23 PM

I am experiencing a Flashing Zoom - - mm error in the forward default position. I cannot change from ETTL to Manual mode. Batteries have been replaced, pull out shield inserted correctly.

Any ideas?

Read page 18 of your manual and see if that is your problem. Wide panel may not be pushed in all the way. The blinking is an alert.

Also, it seems my 580EX II LCD blinks if I have the flash head in the down most position which is used for close up photography. Not sure if the 430 does that or not.

It probably won't do anything, but it's worth a shot - take the batteries out and let it set for a while and try it again. Be sure that all the batteries are fresh.

Just as a trouble shooting point of reference - my 430ex will change from ETTL to manual no matter what position the head is in or where the wide angle panel is placed.
Pushing the head lock button causes zoom to go to -- as does leaving the head in any position other than forward. Pulling the wide angle panel zoom goes to 14mm.

Also, is it on the camera or off the camera? Ruling out a camera setting or issue.

No down tipping on the 430ex.

Thanks!
I read the troubleshooting section in manual with no resolution. Wide panel inserted correctly.

Errors happen off the camera with wide panel properly inserted with head in forward position. Normal or wide zoom displays the same blinking alert. Fresh set of batteries installed.

Thanks picman
