Canon tele-extenders - 11-13-2009, 12:01 AM

Okay, looking at the two Canon Tele-extenders: main lens I'm wanting to use it with is a 70-200 F4L: I know I'll lose the AF with the 2x as opposed to the 1.4x, but beyond that, will it work okay? I'd just rather get the most bang for the buck in focal length, and don't have a problem with manual focus if need be...

the 2x is really soft. I would suggest sticking with the 1.4, its much sharper and retains over all image quality much better. The 2.0 works in a crunch but its not a good every day solution.

Agreed, with the 1.4 you're looking at a 5.6 lens, not too bad for most situations but with a 2x your at f/8, down to f/11 or 16 for decent sharpness.

But think about it, if you slap a 1.4 onto a 70-200, you get yourself a 300/5.6 on the long end (280mm really), wouldn't it be easier to buy a 70-300 for when you want the range? Canon has a 70-300 USM that focuses faster than the basic versions, and you retain the wide end at 70mm instead of losing it to 98mm with the TC. They also have a 100-300 which although older design, I'm told has better optics. Also USM. Then again, if you're traveling, the TC is easier to pack.

Link to a person selling the 100-300 in the Buy/Sell section (and for less than the cost of the 1.4x: http://www.texasphotoforum.com/forum...hlight=100-300

I just picked up a 1.4x mainly for my 400 but i slapped it on my 70-200 just to see how they turned out compared to the lens by itself. shooting wide open you could tell alittle difference in contrast and sharpness but hardly any at all. Stopped down the images look the same unless you start pixel peeping at 100%, even then it hardly any difference.

I will say that the 70-200 with a TC will turn out images that are alot cleaner and sharper then what the 70-300 will as suggested above. I owned a 70-300 at one point and comparing the images to that with the 70-200+1.4x, there not even close.
