Backdrop crossbar to use with standard light stands? - 12-17-2009, 10:41 AM

I am trying to find a decent backdrop crossbar to use with standard light stands. I have seen several that seem to require additional hardware, or at least it wasn't real clear. I like to Giottos BR-4 but cannot find anyone that actually sells it, and teh Giottos site lists it as new.

Anyone have any suggestions or experience on a decent setup to use with standard lightstands with minimal effort? I am using Giottos LC210 stands if that helps.

Keith, if portability is not needed, you may want to consider a DIY solution using either PVC or metal tubing from Home Depot attached to the stands with Manfrotto Super Clamps. The super clamps are very versatile and will hold the tube, but can also be used for many other purposes, like attaching a head to a surface like a door or table, etc.

I hadn't thought of that. Thanks! I should have thought of that since my current setup is about $12 of PVC piping bought in the same aisle as the metal tubing.

Just take care with the combined weight of the bar and the paper or background you are hanging. A metal pipe stiff enough to span 120" would need to be either fairly thick or large diameter to avoid too much sagging across a 10 foot span. If you're hanging seamless with a core, that's not too much of an issue, but if you put a muslin or other substantial backdrop up, it's something to take care with. YMMV.

That is something I had not thought of. So far my backdrops have been tablecloths, curtains and sheets, but one day may evolve some.

Scott, good point about the rigidity of the crossbar.

I am sure you can find a tube at HD for a few dollars strong enough to hold a standard roll or even a heavy muslin. My telescopic backdrop crossbar, which is a cheap Ebay set, works great with seamless paper, but sags a little with a heavy 10x20 muslin, so I am thinking of procuring a heavy, non-telescopic pipe, to use with super clamps the few ocassions I use muslin. The sag can be a problem at f/16 and higher, as the muslin surface will not be flat if it sags in the middle.

10' gas pipel from HD will do the trick, you can either drill holes < a pain> or use the super clamps. But wouldnt it be just as easy to buy a BG stand?
