Anyone notice the 7D renders colors differently? - 12-23-2009, 12:20 PM

I'm moving up to the 7D from a 40D. Was taking some test shots lastnight and noticed that even with manual white balance, my cameras were rendering totally different colors. This was mostly noticeable with greens and reds. Has anyone else noticed this?

I haven't used the 7D yet, but I have noticed this between the 1D3 and the 50D. They produce different results with the same lenses. I can tell which one I used for a photoshoot immediately. I'm guessing this is pretty normal.

Ever since the 5D Mk II, I think Canon has "Beefed up" the way they deal with colors. This may be the results you're seeing in the 7D. I know the 5DII has excellent color depth... even better than the D700.

I shoot with both and the main difference is that on the 7D there is a feature called picture styles. This feature dictates how your images will be recorded.

Basically with a picture style you can control the sharpness, contrast, saturation and color tone.

I forgot to add, most likely when you shot your test images the picture style was set at the default, so the image was kinda off. But with the picture style you could tweak your images to match those of your 40D.

The 40D has a picture style menu but, I've always left this stuff at it's default settings because my understanding was that the only thing it affected is JPG processing in camera. Since I typically shoot RAW, I didn't care to change it. I meant to maintain the same work flow with the 7D and so again, I elected to leave those settings at their defaults. Is my understanding of Picture Styles wrong?

Hehehe, you're right Gary, there is a picture style on the 40D, I just never bothered touching it before as opposed to the 7D where it is more prominent because of the button.

I too shoot RAW, the picture styles at least for the 7D do affect the values stored on the RAW file but like everything on RAW file it is editable. I up'd the sharpness when I wanted to match with the images I get from my 40D.

It will effect the raw file if you convert it using DPP. If you use a different raw converter the Picture Styles don't have an effect on raw files. I find the 7D to handle reds and greens better than any previous xxD camera.

If I use DPP to convert the raw files I use a custom picture style profile that I have developed. I have never liked the default profiles Canon uses for their Picture Styles.

I am using lightroom, and recently added a 50d along with my 40d.

My typical settings (I do this with either camera) are to set the WhiteBalance to K(elvin) and usually choose 5200 (especially when shooting with strobes) On the 40d in lightroom, they will import in lightroom with 5100/-4or the white balance info. For the 50d they come in at 5100/+20. And the color is visibly different. If I take both files shot with equal exposures, and change them in post to something like 5400/0, then they will look identical, so the colors are rendering the exact same, but they are not importing that way

I have not tried to use DPP yet to see how it comes out in the canon supplied program. I have not been unhappy enough with the results to load it up yet.

My point in bringing all of this up is that I would imagine that the 7D is fairly similar to the 50d as well

If you have Lightroom and/or Photoshop, DPP might not add that much value. However, I've used it in the past and it's excellent for bundled software.
