I wonder what it cost new. Good reason to hold onto *old* lenses.

Here's a possible more "realistic" compromise:

That lens came up in a recent discussion of fisheye lenses. Photo Arsenal holds the record for wildly overstated pricing. That's their business model and they are sticking to it. They only need to find one sucker.

Realistic information about the lens:

I think about a year ago I saw an old add posted online for one of these for like 1K....I contacted the person in the add..and he stated he sold it over 10 years ago for 500.00 and wish he had held on to it...

Nikon has some really cool lenses that are rare...and unfortunately...most of them have been ruined.

But here is the best informational data-base on all the Nikon Lenses know...how-many made...and years made...also pictures of the lenses...Nikon Lens Serial Numbers....this site is full of great information...including what accessories go with what lenses....very valuable...

This is the lens that I lust over....Nikon Nikkor 1200-1700mm F5.6-8...if anyone has one laying around...let me know...............

Have seen one of those, and yes it is huge.
It was at a camera shop that used to be on BrownTrail in Bedford,TX back in the late 70s / early 80s.
i forgot what Nikon lens it was... but there was one about the time of that 6mm and 8mm when I had my Nikons, that the lens had to be mounted with the mirror locked up, because the rear lens elements went so far into the film body, to get the rear element as close to the film as possible.

I think it was the 8mm like this one Fish-eye-NIKKOR 1:8 f=8mm No.88056
Mouse over the image to see the back of the lens without the cap to see how far into the camera body that thing went.

Holy crap, and people complain about the big front element on the 14-24. I thought you only needed 8mm to go circular fisheye for 35mm, I wonder how the FOV of this one is different.

EDIT - I see from Wayne's link what the difference is, this lens has a 220deg FOV rather than 180, which means it can actually see behind itself.

How would it see behind itself with that big black ring around the element? Wouldn't that block/vignette to the point that it only sees 180˚?

Here is a pretty neat thread I found while googling about this lens.... it is a little dated, but still neat.
