No, at the beginning, I will have to send out for processing. Eventually, once I have gotten the hang with the camera with a 35 summicron type IV, I will have to look into learning how to process my own B&W.

If I had any sense, I would make you an offer we can't refuse for an M5 and my like new 35/2.0 UC-Hexanon. Less than an M7 without a lens.

The main advantage of the M3 is high magnification viewfinder and hence, better focusing accuracy. It doesn't have 35mm framelines but can properly focus any available lens with ease. If you intend to use 35mm lenses a lot, then it may not be the best choice. However if you like using a 90/2 wide open, then it is the best.

If you are running away from auto-everything, it doesn't quite make sense to stop short at the M7. The M3, M2 and the first run of the M4 have a certain extra level of aura about them. Perhaps it's the engraved top plate or the bright chrome. They don't have an internal meter, unlike the M5 or later, so a seperate meter would be needed. It doesn't really bother me, because I generally just need one light reading for a given condition.

I know Camera Coop on Shepherd has at least one single stroke M3 for sale and another M which I can't remember. I've also bought cameras from Collectible Cameras and was happy.

M3 with DR Summicron and close focusing attachment:

If you are going to get serious about Leica you need to get to know these people, Sherry Krauter (Sherry K.) and Don Goldberg (DAG).

You've got to watch Sherry or she'll try to talk you into an M5 like Wayne.

Sherry likes M5's.

Why M5 instead of M6 classic?

Sherry trained at Leica in the early 70s. When the M5 was new. The list of groundbreaking features is long. The M5 and the Canon EF share the same shutter speed layout. Under your index finger where you can change shutter speeds and fire at the same time time. Guess who owns both cameras? Couple that feature with the continuously variable shutter and it's very easy to shoot in "aperture priority" mode. The M5 was last camera made in Wetzler the old fit and adjust way. Just like the M3, M2 & M4. Leitz made some mid-run improvements when they added th 3rd lug. The shutter was reworked, the shutter speed dial detens were firmed up, and few other internal fixes. The viewfinder was the last of the flare free models until maybe the MP.

Bigfoot was born with 2 lugs. Sherry added all of the later improvements. The camera is identical to the later 3 lug models. Bubba is a later 3 lug model. DAG added the 28mm & 75mm framelines.

The body top & bottom plates are brass not zinc. The meter is a true variable angle spot. The meter area is visible in the viewfinder. The meter is amazing. Shutter speed visible in the viewfinder.

However, the camera does not fit the M3 form factor. The Nit Pickers hate it. Go figure.

They are all good. Personal choice plays a big factor. I like the M5 because the layout is exactly like my Canon EF. The M5 was current when I bought my EF in the 70s. I wanted the M5 back then. Stuff happens and I had to wait.
