Compatible accessories for the Canon Markll - 02-01-2010, 01:52 PM

I received a Markll for Christmas and have tried my Alien Bees studio equipment wireless and everything worked fine, but I was wondering if my Pentax 540 flash and off camera hot shoe would be compatible. I called Canon and they told me I needed their equipment. I appreciate any input.

The Pentax flash might work if you can set it manually and trigger it with something like Pocket Wizards, Radio Poppers, etc. The Canon camera won't talk to it in TTL mode most likely, and unless there's some kind of module you can buy for the flash it won't work just on the camera's hot shoe.

If you want an on-camera accessory flash, you can go with Canon or get a third-party one designed specifically to work with Canon digital SLRs.

Does your camera have a PC outlet? Plug the Pentax flash into the camera's PC socket and see if it fires when you trip the shutter.

Oh. It's THAT Mk II.

I have the off camera pentax hot shoe adapter that I used with my pentax camera. I just need to set my bracket up with my pentax flash and shoot manual. With such a nice Christmas gift I don't want to fry my Mark ll. I just thought I would check with you guys first to see if anyone had info they could add. I appreciate the info and taking the time to answer my questions.

Just an FYI -- there are several "Mark II's" from Canon. In this case it will not make much difference for what you are trying to do (as they should all behave the same.) But in the future if you are asking for equipment help it will be helpful to state that you are speaking of the 5d.
