When our attention was called to the fact that the D300 is a better buy, especially if you're interested in mounting older MF lenses. That is not to denigrate the D90, but, it is no D300. The D300 also faster than a D2X, for a lot less money.

I have the D2X and D700, and at base ISO up to 800 the D2X is really nice, and that 100% viewfinder, and pro body feel is something. The D700 and grip DOES NOT feel as nice as the D2X. One big advantage the D300/D700 series has is the built in flash commander. But the D2X just feels so good...... And I shot many a good photo with my D2X.

We own a D2x along with D3, D300, D70, d"D50 & D50-IR.

With that, I would go D300 if you can. My D2x is my back up camera. It only goes up to ISO 800. I shot a lot of low light and my D2x is not very good for that. But I do live the feel.

There are Pros and Cons to all. Your buget will lead you to one or the other.
