I went with canon because a good friend of mine had been shooting canon for a while and had really nice glass. He would let me borrow it when I needed, so it was the absolute best system for me to start out with. I have since become accustomed to canon. Further, I also started out having a grip on my camera so picking up one that does not have a vertical grip on it feels incomplete as well.

as stated by Allen, interacting and controlling your camera effectively is much much much more important that image quality performance or price.

It's been said already, but I'll emphasize that lenses are the most important. However, with the advances in camera bodies they do make a difference as well. Unless you really want video capability, I'd go with a used body (the original Canon 5D is becoming a steal and the pure IQ will blow you away).

Between the two bodies, the Nikon D90 is a mid-level camera while the Canon T2i is an entry-level camera. Both are fine, but you can make your money stretch further with a used body.

The D90 is the best camera you can buy for the money.

I've used mine to back up my D3 and the customers could not tell the difference in the pictures.

Based on?

For image quality at $1000 or less, I'd put a 5D mark I up against that any day.

This is the second time you have made this statement, and the second time that you have provided nothing to back it up. I will grant you that according to the specs and according to output it is a nice camera for the price, and seems to provide a fair value, but so do cameras from three other makers, all in that same price point.

The 5D Mark I is old technology. You are comparing a used camera price to a new one.

Granted, Canon has not managed anything much better except by specs since the 5D.
I was very tempted when I read about the new 5D Mark II at more than twice the price of a D90 but they never fixed the ergonomics and the focus problems remain.

Just go to an impartial third party to compare performance like DXO mark. They show the D90 with higher marks but not by much.

But, forget the specs and what others shoot or like. I've even heard photographers curse their 1Ds Mark III and D3x cameras because they could not get them to work. These are great cameras but not what these photo takers should have bought.

My advise is for the buyer to go to the store and get a hands on comparison.

If you buy a D90 or a 5D because it works best for you, then I am very happy that you made the right decision.

Which is especially damning for the D90, since the 5D will out perform it.

The D90 is also newer than Scott's Hasselblad, and there is no chance in the world a D90 could hold even the tiniest candle to what the Hassy will do.

Now we know you are a troll. Sad.

I own the 5DII. There are no focus problems. There are no ergonomics problems.

But it is still asinine to jump on threads and tout a camera, then walk off without giving any justification. From your last post, it is obviously you are just trolling the forum, so I guess it worked. Very sad.

Go to the store, pick them up, play with them, see which feels better. Get that one.

Listen to the folks who know. Buy quality once. That will save you money in the long term.

Not only is Scott's Hasselblad better than a D90, so is my Hasselblad 501, Leica M5, Linhof Technika V, EOS-1DIII, etc.

As for new versus old technology: That argument doesn't hold water. Newer isn't always better.

Save your money. Be on the lookout for a nice clean 5D priced right.

Old Technology.... seriously? There are professional photographers still using Large and medium format film cameras (analog) what do you call that technology? ancient or medieval technology? I honestly could care less about brands and this recommendation is totally based on what the OP needs. The 5D is a Full Frame camera that will render superb images the IQ generated by this "Old Technology" camera will kick the D90 and 50D @@s any day. The super shallow DOF this camera generates do to it's FF sensor is just incredible perfect for portraits other FF sensor cameras options will be: 5DMKII, 1Ds MKIII, D700, D3, D3s but this ones get out of your budget pretty quick.
The best bang for your buck is the original 5D with a 85 1.8 or a 50 1.4 and you will be ready to render great images don't worry to much of what paranoiac people has to say about cameras. The original 5D has been used by many many professionals out there with extremely great results.
Good Luck!!

A disposable camera from Walgreens is the best camera you can buy for the money. The money-to-image ratio is dirt cheap compared to all the garbage we have to buy to capture, store, process, print and show off digital files.

Just like cars, we all have different needs and different-shaped butts (or hands in the case of cameras), so go and see what feels good, explore your needs and consider your budget. My answer is usually that for camera bodies, going a few years older gives you the most bang for your buck. That's also my answer for cars.

if the horse isn't dead already... like everyone else says, it's really all about how it feels in your hand. The only true advantage (i know of) that even canon users admit to is the CLS (wireless flash system for speedlights) built in to the pop up flash of the D90. If video is your thing, canon has 1080p. I personally love the D90 (though it's not used as much since i got the D700) and the nikon system overall. can't stand the ergonomics of canon, but i have plenty of friends who love the canon system and have no idea how i function with the nikon.

now, to go back to the discussion about the 5D... nikon doesn't really have a camera that matches the 5D (the D700 kind of falls in between the mk I and the mk II; definitely closer to the mk II), so if you end up liking the canon system, I'd say go for a used 5D, but keep in mind, the ergonomics of the 5D will be significantly different to the consumer level T1i/T2i. menu system and button presses should be similar (though i could be completely wrong).

on another note, the D90 maybe up for a refresh soon...
