I don't know in CS4, but in CS3 do this:
1) Open an image in Photoshop
2) File -> File Info
3) On new dialogue box, click Advanced on the bottom of the choices on the left
4) Click the disclosure triangle on "http://ns.adobe.com/exif/1.0/aux (or similar)

The image number will be at the bottom, labeled "aux:ImageNumber:"

This works in PSE6, too.

thanks, i found it, d300 3200, d2x 10000
it was in a similiar place in cs4

Darn, I see some of the #s on this thread and I realize that I shoot the crap out of my cameras, 2 D300s, 16K+ shots on the newer one, about 8 months old, and pushing 54K on the older one.

What, you don't count in your head every time you press the shutter?

Click. "One." Click. "Two."

Actually this is very helpful, if the Mac hints work for a Canon file.
