Question Nikon Shutter Counts... - 02-25-2010, 10:30 PM

How the hell do you find them? My Olympus had a secret 'code' that you did with the control keys and it showed you. I can't figure it out on the Nikon.

I read somewhere that you could find out from Opanda Exif, so I downloaded it and still nothing? Got every other bit of information that you could possibly think of, but surely not the shutter count.

Am I missing something?

I use EXIFTOOL and read from the latest picture. Works with Nikon AFAIK.

Adobe PS CS4 can read it.

Opanda IExif 2.3 is what I like using.

Both work with my Nikon D90 jpg files.

Does it only apply the info if you shoot jpg first? I shoot RAW, then upload to LR, then export into JPG. I noticed that when I exported I had LR set to minimize meta data. After I changed it and re-exported I got a lot of info, but still no shutter count, unless the actual shutter count isn't named 'shutter count.'

If your using windows to view the data it does show it all. Alot more info is there. And yes your raw file and jpg should have all the data. Download Opanda IExif like what was said before and you'll see what I mean.

Opanda works for the D70 and beyond. There's a field named "Total Number of Shutter Actuations" near the bottom.

RK is right. I import using Nikon Transfer, and you can convert it to JPG from there. I shoot in RAW+JPG ... well, because I can. I just loaded the JPG right after importing it with IExif and it showed my count.

I must be doing something wrong then, and thats completely possible. I wonder if it has to do with the fact that I import in LR, and copy to Nikon Tranfer.

Chris,

Open Opanda and then use it to open the file. You need to get an image that has not yet been exported from LR. What I do is go to the catalog backup and open the Nef file. It will be near the bottom and will read something like "Total number of S" .... thats where mine cut's off.

Hope this makes sense and helps.

W

If you have an account on Flickr, you can take a shot and then upload it directly to Flickr from your computer (don't process it at all, just take it and copy it to your desktop and then upload)....and then you can look at the "more properties" area in the lower right hand side of the page.

Your total actuations (shutter count) will appear in the long list of data under the "more properties" area.

Do you use a MAC? If so, download "EXIF viewer" and drop a photo over it. If you exported it (a jpeg) with the metadata retained it will tell you the shutter counts.

You can also view the shutter count in "Preview' for mac when viewing RAW or JPEG files. Open the image in Preview, Tools Menu, Show Inspector, CLick on the 2nd tab on top(little i inside a circle), then Exif and scroll down to see Image Number. HTH

Opanda finally worked. I had to shoot a jpg and copy it from the camera directly to my desktop.

I'm at 15,188.

Thanks all.
