Hypothetical 5D Mk II vs 7D - 03-05-2010, 06:00 PM

Ok.. I know what the specs say, but specs don't talk about things like IQ...

How do the 5D2 and 7D compare on Image Quality? Usability? Video quality?

Anybody got links to share on these kinds of comparisons?

Well a 5dkmII is always going to have a higher IQ.

I mean it's a FF versus 1.6 crop sensor. If you want, you can go to the digital picture and compare their charts with your current lenses.

Usability: I don't have them but one could pretty much assume since it's canon, they all have about the same ergonomics. I guess it's slighty different between the 1 series and the rest of the lineup but it looks like the 40d/50d/7d/5dmk2 are all generallly the same. I'm sure you would pick up each nuiance fairly quickly.

Video quality, I would still have to say 5dmk2 now that the new firmware is almost out.

Having used both even though not side by side on the same subject I would say they are very close. The 5d gets the slight edge due to a larger sensor and 3 extra megapixels but all in all in the right hands youll get great results from both. 7d has probably the best autofocus in this level camera and the video gets a slight edge due to the video features being more intergrated in the 7D.

I have both and if your focal length limited the 7D would be a little better but if not the 5DMKII produces a better file both in detail and noise control.

Focal length limitation requires that you crop the 5D file down to the FOV of the 7D to see any advantage by the 7D. The same would hold true for the 1DMKIV compared to the 5D.

If I have to do minor cropping based on the FOV I'm looking for then the 5DMKII is going to produce better IQ, especially in the high ISO noise control area.

The 7D trumps the 5D in features but I like the simplicity of the 5DMKII.

Thanks, guys... I'm leaning toward the 5DII, but the 7D is tempting at such a lower price.

Of course, I ain't getting nuttin unless this job comes through. LOL

After using both I would agree with Jim that the Mk II produces a better image in both detail and noise control, more evident in the higher iso performance of course.

The latest firmware for the Mk II that will be coming out this month will add some nice updated video features and audio level monitoring.

I will see if I can take some time this weekend to put together a side by side comparison of something.

I will say that as far as noise up to 3200 on the 7D i have been pleased. It gets a little rough after that but still very usable for web and small prints. For me where the high iso helps in video mode.

It looks like color and contrast wise, the 5DII is also superior...

I tried 7d for a week, the initial impression was yuck. Yes, the high iso 18MP image after resizing, mostly what you see on the web, is good but the per Pixel level noise on the 5D Mark is much superior. No comparison.

How does the focus accuracy/quickness compare between the 5DII and 7D?

I have both, and both serve very different needs.

The 5D2 has much better IQ.

The 7D is much better at AF and tracking.

Both are great cameras, but get the one that suits your needs. If you are shooting birds or sports, get the 7D. If you are shooting portraits, macros, landscapes and weddings, get the 5D2.

Brad,
I may be biased because I do not own both cameras, but here is my opinion on this quesion:

I do not believe that you will be hindered by the image quality on any camera that canon makes. If you nail the shot (whether it is with a 1 series - 5d Mk II, 50d or 7d) then you will have a good shot. Printed up to 16x20 and I do not think you will be able to tell what camera produced the shot. I say this to say that it would seem to come down to a decision on how wide you normally work? If you think that the 7d will work for you with the crop factor (meaning that wides are not going to be as wide as with a 5d) then the 7d is the better value.

Boils down to this -- whatcha shootin?

For my money a well executed photo and good solid post processing beat raw image quality and poor shooting everyday of the week.

For the difference in price you could probably pick up a really nice prime lens as well if you went the 7d route though

I want it all! Can't wait to see what a 1Ds Mark IV is going to cost.
