Unhappy Spending Virus - 03-06-2010, 09:29 PM

Last weekend I went to Houston Camera Exchange to buy some studio lights and ended up buying a new Nikon D300S, and no lights.

This weekend I went back to buy two Pocket Wizzards (to use on multi photographer shoots) and ended up buying the Pocket Wizzards AND two flash heads, stands, soft box, umbrella, etc...

I hope this isn't just me, and that there are others out there doing this, otherwise I need some help. I also bought a couple of primes since January.

Shooting nature was so much cheaper.

Nope.
Just you.
I went in today to buy a 17-50 2.8 and that's all.

Wouldnt the umbrella and softbox be a bit intimidating if you're a birder? :)

I think I saw you lingering around the light area, did you have your children with you? I was there around 10ish

Oh, I should have clarified....I got the Tamron version. Wife would take the gun out if I dropped $1200 on a piece of glass and she couldn't wear it on her finger.

Though I got to say, so far I am very pleased.

Yes, intimidated by studio lights, although I shoot more alligators than birds. Yeah that was me 10ish. Logged one studio shoot and now I'm on a mission. Ha!

David - haha...yeah, I was on the verge of getting my first set of lights and reflectors. I'm gonna hold off on that for now, I may go on the 'cheap' side with a strobist setup.

And I only walked out with only a think tank hydrophobia

I'd be happy with a Tamron 17-50 2.8!

What you're suffering from is GAS, or Gadget Acquisition Syndrome.

It's highly contagious... transmits and activates the instant you come in to contact with new and shiny gadgets of any kind.

I have an SB900 and that puppy is powerful. I can see why so many folks are going strobist. So easy and mobile. Love the gells.

Thats why I stay out of the stores and off of bhphotovideo.com

Not to mention bhphotovideo.com is cheaper than Houston Camera Exchange. I only go there if I must have it now.

I wonder around the place a lot, but I rarely buy much. Usually only what I go there for.

I've had the spending virus this year.

So far in 2010:
3 elinchrom lights + lots of modifiers
5D mark II +Grip
7D + Grip
24-105L

:(

I want more.

I usually comparison shop. Of late, what I was looking for, the pricing between B & H and HCE were comparable and I like being able to get it in my hands same day; not to mention I like keeping the $$ in our local economy.

For this last lens, they were willing to price match it to the same price as I would have paid at Ritz since it was available at a store here in town; which also just so happened to be the same price I could have also gotten it for from B & H.

So if the price works out to the same to me in the end, I'll go with HCE first every time.

you don't have to stay out of stores....the internet offers you many opportunities to contract this activity. Between Craigslist, B&H, Amazon, Adorama etc you can do just as much damage as if you'd walked into your local shop...lol
