Raw NEF vs Snow Leopard

• Bought Nikon D300s.
• CS3 Photoshop plugin for raw NEF worked with my D80 but not this camera.
• So downloaded recent free plugin upgrades, but they won't install with Mac's system Snow Leopard (which is OS X 10.6.2) on my recent Imac.
• So paid $50 and downloaded Nikon Capture 4, but it won't install on this Mac or my MacBook laptop. No phone numbers and the company I bought from is in Canada.
• All I want to do is edit my NEF files from my D300S.
• I call Nikon and they say to buy Capture NX2 2.7.1.
• Is this a Zen test of my ability to cope?
• Any help would be welcome, as I hate to buy something else that may not install or work with this Snow Leopard.

Have you downloaded the newest Camera Raw update?

Which recent plugins won't install with Snow Leopard? The Adobe ACR ones? If that's the case it's not because of Snow Leopard it's because Adobe only releases new ACR plugins for the current version of Photoshop. To support your D300s you need Photoshop CS4.

You either need to get CS4, or get the most recent version of DNG converter and convert your NEFs to DNG. Capture 4 is _really_ old, NX2 has been current version for a long time.

You could also get Aperture or Lightroom, but either of those would cost more than upgrading to CS4 (Capture NX2 would cost more too).

You have no idea how helpfull this is. My wife, a graphic artist also, said she thought I needed to upgrade to CS4 as well, and problem solved. I will do that pronto, and so glad I did not order NX2, as I'd rather use photoshop. Thank you so much for your help.

Ok, I upgraded to CS4 and upgraded the Camera Raw and all is well.

You'll love CS4, too. Some of the changes I noticed are subtle (check out the clone stamp tool), but nice.
