pocket wizards! - 03-12-2010, 03:32 AM

I just found a coupon code for 15% off pocket wizards on amazon so I decided it was time to purchase so I grabbed 4 of them. Ended up being $150 each shipped.

I was so excited until I was informed about the new Mini and Flex!

gaaaaah! I've known the Plus IIs have been tried an true but did I just make a bad investment? Are the new models leaps and bounds ahead of the Plus IIs?

I'm fairly new to the world of lighting and have limited experience with Plus IIs. I'm looking at youtube vids and reviews of the Mini and Flex right now.

Anyway, I'm still pretty stoked about getting new toys regardless.

Pocket Wizards are the industry standard. Not a bad investment at all. The new ones are mainly for using your camera's TTL with speedlights.

Not a bad investment at all.

The Mini and the Flex are good if you ever need Hypersync and like Thomas said TTL.

In fact, down the road you may end up just needing only one (Mini or Flex) because PWs are always backward compatible.

At least early on, it seemed there were some problems with some of the newer models. I'm hoping to add some Plus IIs to my bag in the near future ... they're just so simple and nearly bomb-proof.

The Plus II's are great, you won't be disappointed. I just did an event where, in a perfect world, I would have had 9 PW's running at once. It seems you can never have enough.

Yep. 4 to run a photobooth and 5 to light the inside of a barn that was housing the event. With both setups running in the same room optical triggers would be impossible.

I ended up running a long sync cord for 1 light in the photobooth and shooting the event with fast primes to get away with 3.
