Compact Camera for Backpacking - 03-16-2010, 08:53 PM

The last digital point and shoot I purchased was the Nikon CoopPix 3000 back in about 2003 or 2004. It was a good camera, but it has since bitten the dust.

In August, I will be going on a ten day backpacking trip with my Boy Scout troop. I am in need of a small camera, that has good battery life and lightweight (and tough too).

My budget is around $100 to $150. I've already spent too much money on actual backpacking equipment, so the less I can spend the better.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated...not only by me, but by the rest of the crew.

What about the Olympus X-560wp.
its on the high side of your price range, but its waterproof feature makes is a good candidate for outdoor uses such as camping where you never know what the weather might do.

On of my motorcycle friends has one and really likes it and doesn't worry about it when having to ride through thunder storms.

The Canon SD1200 (or newer 1300, 1400 though over the budget) might fit what you need. It's really compact and takes on a beating (I've had 2 and great value for the price and excellent IQ). Not the best low light noise, but for the price I think it's very good.

the old blown budget story and photography is getting the cut?! joking.

my mom has dropped a couple of cameras in the last couple of years. my dad finally got her one that is shock resistant (kodak i think). but, when i go back packing, i usually have a dslr with me and a p&s. my buddy "lightly" dropped my canon sd750 a couple of years ago in the smoky mts (on the first day of course). it was a $25 repair, but didn't work the rest of the trip.

if you want compact, any p&s should suffice. boy scouts and expensive things don't mix, independent of being shock resistant or not. that's why we don't let them use any of our camping and climbing equipment.
