    Nikon SB-800 battery compartment lid

On the Nikon SB-800, there is a accessory (SD-800, "extra-battery holder") piece that allows the speedlight to hold 5 AA batteries instead of 4.

I put this on the flash the day I got it, over two years ago. This weekend I went to take it off to go back to the 4-battery setup, but I can't seem to find the "original" little battery compartment lid. I've searched everywhere.

It was so long ago, that I don't remember actually putting it on. Does the "original" battery compartment lid get re-used when the SD-800 is installed? What I mean is, do you have to remove the battery compartment lid from the SB-800, install it in the SD-800, then install the SD-800 onto the SB-800?

I'm wondering if I have lost the original battery compartment lid, or if it is just used as part of the SD-800 now and I forgot removing it and reinstalling it.

    This is the SD-800:

    Nope.

You've lost it. I have mine in my camera bag.

    yeah, you've lost it.

It's ok, just keep using 5 batteries. It's been that way for two years, you probably get used to it already. I do the same.

Well, I discovered that I can remove the lid from the SD-800 and it works on the SB-800. The problem with continuing to use the 5-battery setup is that is leaves odd numbers of batteries when I buy 4-packs. At $20 a pop for lithium batteries, this is significant. :(
