Pocket Wizard Remote Shutter at high fps - 03-24-2010, 05:36 PM

I'm sure I have the answer to this but needed confirmation...

I'm looking to pick up a couple of PW's and cables to trigger another camera, I know the remote camera would be the receiver, the PW mounted on hand would be the transmitter. Now, if I have the remote PW firing at 5+ fps and the master firing at 7+ fps, would the remote cam keep triggering until it has caught up with the number releases done on the master? I'm thinking no.

No. It will only fire as long as it is getting a signal to do so. Once you stop shooting with your primary camera, your remote will stop shooting also.

So..., you were thinking correctly.

In fact the remote will probably skip a few actuations here and there as 5fps and 7fps will always be out of sync.

Yep, will do, I'll have to see if HCE has the 10pin cable for the d300s, otherwise, it'll be BH or Adorama and it probably wont get here before the weekend.

So while youtubing, i ran across this video. Would you be paranoid how he has his setup 6" off the edge of a wall? BTW, the video is about triggering the shutter remotely, sekonic, pocketwizard and wired

If you set the remote camera to Continuous Low/High then one push of the PW trigger will get you the maximum frame burst you set on the camera. So if you set CL to 5fps then when your master camera goes off (even at single frame) then the remote will fire off 5 frames and then stop. If the master camera is set to CH at 7fps the remote will still fire just 5 frames and stop unless the master fires off again after the remotes 5 frames are finished.

Joe - correct me on this and on my original post, I was overthinking things. Both will be set to cH, slave ~5fps, master ~8fps, as long as I'm smashing the button, the slave will trigger, but once I let off the button, both will cease. I don't think if you trigger the master once, that it will trigger the remote to its max. Of course, I could be wrong as I havent tested this yet.

This may sound stupid, but I was thinking the slave could queue the triggers sent from the master if it lags behind.

Hey Ken,

I believe (and I say that because I haven't confirmed it) that smashing the button will continue to trigger the slave but each trigger of the slave when it's in cH mode will wait until that max has been achieved before triggering again. If you let off the button the remote set at cH will continue until the cH (5fps) is completed.

And as far as I know, PW's do not cache or queue trigger attempts.

By pressing the button on the master once, you are triggering the remote set at cH to shoot the max fps it's set for (in this case, 5fps). The remote will not accept another trigger until the 5fps trigger is completed.

This has been my experience.

Joe
