Need a COMPACT TRAVEL tripod - 04-06-2010, 11:06 AM

Needs to be SMALL when folded... no more than 14 inches.
Needs to be light.
Needs to be able to take a small ball head of my choice.
Needs to be cheaper than the typical Gitzo CF setup. I already own one of those.
Needs to be able to hold a rangefinder and lens, NOT a huge dslr and 400mm.
Needs to provide extra stability while holding the camera, but not stand by itself in heavy winds.

Anything out there?
The closest I've found is the Benro C-069M8 Travel Angel

Leica?

I use the trek-pod it is stabel but I would not trust it in any heavy wind conditions...but it is a good monopod and hiking stick...I replaced the head that they have on it...with a micro manfrotto head..just did not trust the magnet mount....

Trek-Pod

Good Luck

Until i read that it breaks down into 4 separate pieces. And then it's still 24" long.
Darn.

Not at all.
Having a tripod allows you to steady the camera more than if you were hand holding it, no matter the weather.
All i'm saying is, it needs to be sturdy enough to provide that little bit of extra support, but it doesn't need to be so sturdy that I would trust it to stand with camera attached hands off in windy conditions.

Looks like the Benro Travel Angel in my first post is going to be hard to beat.

Isn't such a device known as a monopod? I wouldn't mount any gear on a tripod that wasn't able to stand up to conditions. YMMV

Seriously?
You're going to compare a tripod like those pictured to a monopod (which i also own)?
A monopod sways every which way.
Even the most unstable tripod could be used for something like HDR when a monopod could not. I already own a $1k support system. I know exactly what I gain by using it. In the same vain, i know exactly what I'm looking for and how I'm going to use this new tripod.

If you have a helpful suggestion please post it, but please don't dirty this thread any further with comments just for argument's sake.

REALLY????

You ask for information and then mock those that provide it?

And regarding the bold print, then why did you post this anyway?

Didn't mean to 'dirty' your thread, well actually... Never mind.

Excuse me for posting my opinion, "dirty"as you might find it! I'm sure that my 70 years of experience are no match for you, please continue without my input.

Ok, then use your 70 years to enlighten me on how a monopod would be more stable than the Benro, rather than just posting ---> and getting defensive and shutting down. Then maybe your comments would actually be helpful.

Seems like a simple "thanks but a monopod doesnt meet my requirements" or no comment at all is better than ranting on someone. Its quite possible that someone reading this has your answer but may just decline to provide info due to the attitude of your post.

Not pickin, just sayin...
