I don't shoot Canon, so I can't expound on their lenses. But, shooting macro, longer is better because of the larger working distance. So, looking into that 180 is probably worth anyone's time and effort. The larger working distance also allows one capture live subjects from a greater distance, thus not always scaring them off by being right on top of them.

I have a 105 macro, and the short working distance drives me nuts, most of the time. This is an area that screams for using a focusing rail, and good ones don't come cheap. The focusing rail plus ROCK SOLID support, and a remote shutter release.

I'm also using a Nikon 105 but have a lot of friends who loved the Canon 100. One that I do have experience with is the Tamro 90mm. Very nice macro lens and makes and makes a pretty decent portrait lens as well as long as the distance you're wanting is in that range. I shoot mostly items that are contained so 105 works well for me.

I've started using my 105 as a portrait lens for about shoulder up photos.
