YouTube - Tutorial 8 - Filmmaking / Cinematography / Ring Lights
Now his light is leaning more towards shooting video than slr but it still can be used for slr shooting.

I love hot lights for photography, but I find that your every day average Joe tends to squint into them...

I think that is why he went into 40 watters to reduce the squint factor and had to use 12 to get enough light onto the subject. If I built it I probably would overbuild the dimmer switch that would allow you to just change out the bulbs to higher wattages depending on the subject matter shot. You could even alternate bulb wattages and probably have no effect on how the light hits the subject.

Still 40 watts times 12 is 480 watts.. That's a lot of light. For a performer (like the video) who has experience under bright lights, they'd be fine... but I'd hate to spend $100 and have it not work for my average client.

It would cost UNDER $100 and you would still have light bulbs and sockets and you can DIM it for your client to under the squint level! (It would run maybe a bit over a hundred if you bought dimable CFL bulbs but then the additional cost would be the bulbs and the special dimmer which can be used elsewhere.)
