Smile Compact P & S -RAW - 04-27-2010, 09:06 AM

I am interested in purchasing an inexpensive Compact, Point & Shot, RAW, rechargerable with a view finder camera. I have been looking around and found only a few camera that fit this criteria. Namely a Fuji S200EXR, a couple Canons (G11) and Olympus camera and some Panasonic cameras. I was suprised that Nikon did not have a entry in this market. The Nikon P100 was close however, no RAW.

The number of P&S cameras that shoot in RAW format is fairly small, and the number of those that have a viewfinder that is anything but an afterthought is much smaller. If you add in your requirement of "inexpensive", I think you may wind up with a sum total of zero.

I've got the G11, and i like it. It's great for those times when carrying my gear bag is just not going to work.

First, it's not RAW, because raw is not an acronym. In this context, if you were shooting Nikon, the raw mode would be NEF, the acronym for Nikon Electronic Format. Canon has their own raw format, and their own acronym, as do other brands, ad infinitum. So, it's raw, meaning unfinished.

Yes, I realized that Nikon's abbreviation for RAW is NEF and still Nikon does not have a compact digital NEF format camera. Or at least not one that I can find. Any other suggestions for a inexpensive ($350 to $500 or so) camera. thanks, gbhthewoodlands.

Yes, I found that the Canon G11 fit the bill. I was trying to look at all possibilities. Planning to purchase a camera sometime this summer. I will be traveling to Maine this summer, is Abe's of Maine a good place to pick up a camera?

I have a g9 (predecessor to the g11) and it has a viewfinder, raw, hotshoe, etc. Great little camera. I recommend it. But I gotta say that even though it has the viewfinder, I find it fairly useless. No focus confirmation when using the viewfinder, and it is too small for anything but the most general of framing.

That said -- you might look at the powershot s90 and see what you think. There are some neat features on that camera that you really need to hold in your hands and play with to see the potential of.

has all your requirements minus the viewfinder

Nevermind -- I'll take care of it myself!
