LOL I just remembered this when I posted on a different thread. Funny thing is, I just bought a 10D kit for my niece so she can start out.

Old manual glass is the best to learn with. I bet half the new photogs in here don't know what a distance scale is on that old lens

Don't despair, you'll get the best and latest later. Experience shooting with earlier gear will teach you tremendously. Gear you can buy with money, but experience, only time can teach you that.

I still have the F5 from Nikon that I love dearly and don't really want to sell it off :)

There's nothing wrong with learning using a modern DSLR, and/or an AF lens, as they can be shot in full manual mode. However, not all new lenses are coming with distance scales nowadays. I have no problem with the lower cost of older gear, MF or AF. But, that means that if you intend to eventually use a more modern setup, you might as well buy it to begin with, if you can afford it, and learn on it, which avoids having to buy twice.

Manual settings on a 1DsIII are no different than manual settings on Rebel. Proper exposure is proper exposure.

I had an issue with my 1st 7D (AF issue) but my replacement 7D AF is perfect.

Since the vast majority of people who actually own and use the 7D think it is a great camera, the 60D (if there is such a thing) won't be any different.

If you think the 7D is junk, you'll also think the 60D is junk.
