Olympus E-PL1 - 05-03-2010, 11:25 PM

I just picked up an E-PL1 to provide a light weight alternative to my 40D and 5D cameras. When you put the Oly and the 5D side by side the size and weight difference is amazing. Image quality seems to be quite good up to ISO 1600. Much better than any digital PS I've owned. Focusing with the kit lens also seems to be fast enough (firmware 1.1). All in all a nice little camera.

Thanks for the insight, Ken. I am trying to wait and see what the Sony NEX cameras are going to be like, but the E-PL1 is a possiblity to go along with my SLR.

I still love my E-P1 Pen. It's a great compliment to my dSLR, and makes a nice travel kit. Put a Pentax 50mm f/1.7 on it and it's a great camera for sneaking into concerts. Looks like a P&S (not a "professional" camera), so I don't get a lot of undue attention from security. All in all, a fun camera to use.

I thought about getting the E-P1 instead of the E-PL1. The price was difference wasn't very much and the E-P1 has a superior build. In the end I wanted to be able to add an electronic viewfinder so I went with the E-PL1. I have the Panasonic 20mm 1.7 on order which should work well for street photography.

If I was buying today, not sure which I'd get. The E-PL1 also has some advantages. When I bought, the E-P1 was my only choice, but I'm fine with that.

Do you have the viewfinder? If so, how do you like it?

I can't find one in stock anywhere so I'm using LCD at the moment. If the camera works well for street photography the viewfinder will be necessay to speed up composition. I'll wait until I have a better feel for the camera before committing.

I have a viewfinder for my EPL1 that I found on ebay. It came off of a guys EP2, and he sold it because he said he preferred the LCD (????)
The viewfinder is great for my purposes. I hate having to use the LCD. I would recommend it highly. It is sharp and clear and you can see and read all of the info in the viewfinder that would show on the LCD. The last firmware update allowed viewing taken images on the LCD without switching the viewfinder off, as you had to do before the update.

The EPL1 has been getting constant rave reviews. Steve Huff says it produces the best JPG's of Any camera.

My take...The EPL1 doesn't produce the image detail that the 1 series or the 5DII produces, but then the sensor is a 2.0 crop. And it costs considerably less than the Canons. The EPl1 image is far superior to the Canon G10. No comparison there. It is a truly great little camera!!!
