A company's expectations of shutter durability are just guesses. A shutter (or any other part of a camera) can fail at any time. That's why "backup bodies" were invented! And the most paranoid among us carry around three cameras at once.

Shutter-life expectations are quite similar among brands, but differ on the level of model. I think I read that the pro-level Canon 1D Mark IV has an expected 300,000-actuation lifespan. The Nikon D3 models are probably right in line with that. I've seen some older 1D models that have gone through several shutters and continue to crank out great images with a replacement. Of course, the outside of the cameras sometimes look like they've been put through a spin cycle.

Given Japanese industry's love of Deming, I would say those expectations of shutter durability are based on solid statistical data regarding mean time to failure, not guesses.

I would agree with that. These camera companies put quality into their cameras...and not just the $4000 either. If they say 100K acctuations...it will be around that number. Maybe a little more, maybe a little less.

How you treat the camera also has something to do with it. If your shooting in the desert or on the beach, changing your lenses between shots, and shooting at 3/4FPS, you will probobly have a shutter failure before your buddies who shoot in a studio.

Even if they list an average it's just that, an average. I had a Chevy Avalanche that had the transmission go out at 70K miles. This was not on average but it gave me concern when a major part went out way too early.

I'd imagine if they wanted to get a good number they'd really need to check quite a few and get good statistical sampling data to put out a number.

Sometime a shutter will fail regard of the number of activations.

Say you shoot a horizontal, then crop it to vertical. Check the noise from the resulting file on each. We should be judging the real life applications, not the mastubatory pixel-peeping from the files. While a 22MP file from the 5D2 may have more noise than a 12MP file from a D700, you can't tell until you drop it deep to 100%. But it ignores the corresponding increase in detail you would get from a 22mp camera like a 5D2.

Just not a real good way to judge a sensor. I am more interested in real world results.
I agree. I haven't spent as much time as you considering this, but the results I see at DxO don't match my limited experience. Plus, so much more goes into making a camera. The sensor is very important, but it's got to have a good processor and controls.
