D200 - 05-27-2010, 01:36 AM

i have been using a Nikon D200 for a few years now. I have two of them and will keep one as a backup. My question is what should I upgrade to, or should I worry about it at all. I do alot of weddings, and portraits. Also I work in low light and do some sports photography as well. Any help would be great. I almost want someone to talk me out of spending alot of money on a new camera.

I upgraded to the D700 just cause I wanted it and it's light years ahead of the D200 in low light situations. It's a great camera and if a new one comes out it will cost more, So don't wait, go spend that money! You won't be sorry.

I second this! The only reason to wait would be that when new cameras come out, people ALWAYS shed their older cameras at crazy low prices.

If you wanna get a cheap D90 or D700, that would be the time to do so.

When the Canon 7D came out, there were Canon 40D's going on here for as low as $500.

Only you can answer those questions. Are you happy with how the D200 performs? If so, why upgrade?

If you're looking for low-light performance, the D200-D300s jump may leave you disappointed. The D200-D700 jump would probably yield a more satisfied customer -- strictly speaking about low-light performance.

Well if you want the BEST low light performance, get faster glass.

The nikkor 50mm 1.2 will rock out loud in low light.

Thanks for the feedback. The more I think about it I may just spend my money on some great glass and wait for the camera. By the way Zebulus "Massive Attack" is wonderful.

The 200 is still a good camera if it fits you needs, however The d700 would be a significant upgrade. Full frame sensor and the ability to use iso 1600 with almost no noise, and faster frame rate : again if you desire these features.
I did the up grade and have never looked back

This is just my opinion, but, my guess is that we are very near an upgrade for the D700, and that upgrade will significantly improve the low light capabilities of the new model over the current D700. My guess is at least a full stop better. The D3s remains the Nikon low light champ for those that have both the need and the bucks to fill that need. Yes, faster glass can help, but better low light performance of the camera body means that any lens connected to it gets the benefit of better low light performance, not just the faster glass.

With buying gear, I always recommend that you buy when you need it, but with a D700 upgrade due soon, I'd hedge that with an admonition to wait and see the new release, unless you have an immediate need. An extra stop is nothing to sneeze at.
