I agree with Greg and Russ in that you know the purpose of your trip and what you have the ability to take with you. Last year my wife and I traveled to Boston for the Fourth of July. It was a vacation in which we planned to leave the hotel each day and not return until late night. We also planned to cover Boston by foot so I wanted to travel light but still get good photos. I took my D200 without the grip and the Tamron 18-270 VC. I was able to get some very good shots which satisfied our needs. I wasn't burdened with lots of heavy equipment yet still had the reach to get shots from close up to far away.

If you are wondering about the quality of your photos with an all-in-one lens, I have attached a few different types of shots from our trip. All the ones below were hand helded.

Whatever you decide, I'm sure you will get great pictures to remember your trips. Happy shooting!

If it is worth me taking a picture with a DSLR, it is worth using the best lens I have. If I just want a snapshot, the point and shoot will work.

I somewhat disagree with this a little. I know I can crank up my ISO on my D90 to 1600 and still get decent shots that I just can't get with my wifes P&S.

That and much faster AF, faster start up, no(or vary little) shutter lag, real viewfinder, etc...
IMHO, even if you keep a DSLR in full auto and use a superzoom it's still beats a P&S.

Exactly, and that's what got me started. I got tired of missing shots of my daughter after she was born due to several you mentioned but mostly shutter lag. From there I started playing with some of the programmed modes then manual. The rest is history along with many $$$$.

I use Canon 18-200mm IS lens as my travel lens and is very satisfied with its performance. Its very sharp and seems to be better than the sigma. But having just one light extra lense like 50mm f1.4 or f1.8 will be useful for some night photography. But with the high ISO and noise reduction capabilities now we have, that is option unless you are really picky about the pictures. Now if u want to do a lot of architecture type of work you might take a wide angle lense like 10-22mm. So when I travel, I may take one or two light lenses in addition to my 18-200mm but that depends on what I expect to photograph.
