BORROW Scanner for Medium-Format Negs? - 06-13-2010, 02:14 PM

Not sure where to post this.

Would anyone be willing to lend me a good scanner for medium-format negatives. I would need it for about a week.

while i know this isn't what you are asking for, but...

do you have a scanner already? we have a canoscan 8600F and it does a decent job with MF scans.

if not, you can pick up an decent scanner at a decent price. try craigslist even. using the search function, you should be able to find some of the scanners many here use and the on going deals.

if you are looking for strictly a film scanner, you will be harder pressed to find one. you can also pay someone to do the scanning for you. again, a search will yield results of what services people use.

while i understand we all know each other in a virtual sense, i don't know how i feel about letting someone gallup away with my equipment for any period of time. you may find some here who are willing to help you with the scans as well. how many negs are you looking to scan?

You may want to try Scan Cafe. They do good work and are reasonably priced. I have a scanner but when it came time to scan a bunch of slides and negatives they were much easier to use than doing it myself.

thank you for your suggestions. I'm aware of all those options- but was hoping to find one I could borrow. I understand that not everyone would be willing to do that - I wouldn't under many circumstances - however, I have been working in the area for several years and this seemed like the quickest way to get the word out and maybe someone who knew me - or of me - would be willing to help me out.

when I was a student at Texas Tech, they had several scanners down in the photo studio area. The reason that I mention this is that maybe you know someone around who is a professor at one of the schools with a photo program that would allow you access to one of their machines.

Houston Center for Photography's lab use to have scanning equipment. I didn't see it online but might be worth a call and membership.

Debbie,
Have you ever done any film scanning? Will you be scanning B&W, color neg. or color positive? There is a steep learning curve with scanning. It took me about a year to finally see the light with B&W. I find B&W easy now as long as I have good negatives. I still struggle with color. How many negatives do you need to scan?
