Has your camera ever... - 06-14-2010, 07:59 AM

I have a pretty new 7D. Twice in about 6 months for no apparent reason it just locked up. Wouldn't do anything. Couldn't even turn it off. Had to pull the battery, put it back in and then all was well. Has this ever happened to anyone? I took it by my local shop and they said they've heard of it but would be happy to have it checked under warranty if I want them to. Thoughts?

I'd have them check it out. Probably just a quirk as I had the same with my 20D. If they hook you up with a new camera though, that'll be great.

It's under warranty, why not have it checked out?

Nope, my 7D has been rock solid. Send yours back for inspection.

funny you mention this -- just last tuesday I was shooting in near dark conditions, with high paced action and had just fired off a burst of 8 or 10 shots. I bumped the iso from 3200 to 6400 and the camera locked down with "busy" I went through the steps of changing lens, turning off and on, and then removing the battery. I finally pushed the ISO back to 400, fired a shot or two, and then was able to bump up to 6400. The camera had never done that before or since.

Strange isn't it. Local shop says "it's all computer stuff, things lock up once in a while" or something like that. I've been emailing Canon up and back and waiting for their response.

honestly -- this acted in the exact same way when it was flashing "busy" as the old err 99 on my 20d did

Mine showed no error message. Canon told me that it sounded unusual to them and it could have been the card or could have been from high speed shooting/heating up/overwhelmed the computer chip. They made no excuses. The said if it happened again to take it in for a warranty check up, however, since it's an intermittent issue it may be hard to duplicate.

My Nikon D300 locked up on me. I would shoot maybe 3 frames in a row and then the mirror would lock up in a up right position. Turning it off and back on would release it for a temporary fix.
Then it would be good for a while and then it did it again.
It's off to Nikon getting a new shutter, gears, and mirror mechanism.
I'm sure my situation is different from yours. There's a zillion parts in these cameras so nothing surprises me anymore.
I have a little over 120K clicks on it so hopefully with a new shutter and fully repaired it will be like new again.
We'll see.

Just curious / what is Nikon charging for this.. I have a D200 approaching the same numbers and was thinking of a shutter replacement (not failed yet)

It's going to run me around 389.00 but that is because I have more than just one problem. I think shutter replacement is right at 300.00. But don't quote me.

My 5D does this, as does my 30D. I don't remember if my 1D ever did but that was ages ago. It's once every blue moon unless I happen to be using a corrupt card or whatnot, and half the time changing cards fixes it, if turning off/re-seat battery/re-seat lens/re-seat card doesn't work.

I chalk it up to the fact that, just like mentioned before, these are computers. And Lawd knows even the best of computers lock up for no reason too.
