Should I Buy a Floor Model Camera? - 06-16-2010, 03:28 PM

I've come across a nice deal on a Canon Rebel XSi for around $380. Lense included. The only issue is, it's a display model. They guy himself told me the sensor is dirty. I haven't seen the camera as of yet. Lookin to buy tonight. So I need to get as many thoughts as possible.

My question is, should I even consider buying a floor model slr? If it helps, there has been no lense on this camera, just the cap. Or should I just pay $499 for a new in the box XS.

Thanks in advance

Never get the floor model Dslr. Imagine all the people touching the CCD, dropping it, and using it. Nope never forget it.

It's never been turned on
There has never been a lense on it, just the cap

OH no. Liars.

I can guarantee that the cap has been taken off and some kids "meatsticks" touched the sensor/insides.

not a chance in hell that I would buy a floor model.

Once you buy a camera, would you ever consider just passing it around a crowded auditorium so that everyone could play with it and pull on it, open it up and smudge the mirror, and maybe even fire off a few shots without the lens and see if they can hold up the mirror so they can see the shutter in action? I wonder if the pop up flash will pop up without being turned on? I also wonder how fast the dial on the top will turn.

Seems like you would be asking for a host of unknown problems with a floor model, unless it is a floor model in a situation like a camera store where they supervise everyone while they handle it.

on the other hand -- buying used for a known source is a very valid way to get gear at reduced prices.

Sears has to be among the last places that I would EVER spend any money on photography gear.

You can do better than buying it at Sears anyway....but I'm in 100% agreement to skip a "floor model" that was being handled by an unknown number of people who, for the most part, probably had no idea you shouldn't take the cap off and fish around inside the body with their grubby hands! Y-U-C-K!

Carl, I may not agree with you on EVERYTHING, but on this, 100% dead on! It's among the last places on earth I'd ever spend money on anything, but that's another story for another thread...one that involves an idiot contractor who burned my clients' house down by improperly wiring a new HVAC unit.
