Canon 50 f1.8 - 06-18-2010, 10:04 PM

Has anyone here ever experienced this lense getting stuck on the camera body. I have read a few reviews where someone had to auctually break the lense to remove it. My question is, is this a common problem for this lense. It will be use on a 40D and XSI.

I've had two of them, and that was never the problem. I usually broke them some other way (and it's easy to do). Good lens for the pricepoint, but not one that will take abuse. The focus "hunts" in low-contrast and low-light conditions, which wouldn't be an issue if the focus ring was large enough to use well manually! The IQ:price ratio is decent, just don't try to bounce one on the floor. It's a lens that comes well-recommended by many here, though.

I've owned two, and haven't had an issue of it separating the camera as engineered.

Now, the lens separating from itself... that's another story.

It's not a big investment, but...you replace this lens 3 times and you might as well have bought the 1.4.

But one caveat to the 1.4, I've seen its USM go out on numerous copies. Both occasional fair weather shooters and day-to-day pros.

Replace that 3...4...times you might as well buy the 1.2.

Never had any issues with mine. And I think they're tougher than most give credit for. Mine rolled off a table twice onto tile and didn't have any issues.

I have one, actually like it better then the 1.4, perhaps I got a bad copy but I think I would spring for the 1.2L or go with the Sigma before going back to the 1.4.

A lens adapter once got stuck on my camera, but that was because the stop in the adapter bajonet mouth was not high enough. Therefore it was hard to find position where I had to pull the lens off the camera. I don't think this is a problem that you might experience on a 50 / 1.8
I'm quite surprised about negative reviews about inexpensive lenses. Some suggest that the lens will fall apart on your first shoot. I used the 50 / 1.8 many times and it is still as good as new. I wonder how those reviewers handle their lenses.
I would say spend the $100 and you'll get some nice low light and low DOF shots. What is the worst that can happen?

This 50 1.8 is a sweet lense. It's no L Lens in build but it will render great photos. I use it for close ups with the 1.8 is gives great results. I have all L Lenses and this is the only non-L I own, it has it's own little glitch in my bag. Fun Little lens and thus far I have not had any problems with it.

Here's a shot with it. The DOF starts about 1.5" in this close.

We use a couple different 50mm lenses (including the f1.8 and f1.4) on several bodies, and neither one has ever gotten stuck. Not in years.

The f1.8 is a workhorse. The f1.4 has nice, quiet AF, but like many others we have had one go bad on us (still sharp images if you manually focus, but the USM motor is not reliable enough to AF in normal shooting conditions).

My collection comprises heavier lenses (two semi-metal USM lenses and a couple of L's). The 50 f/1.8 is so light (a bonus to many) that it literally flew out of my bag. Well, the second one I owned did. The first one just slipped through my fumble fingers and hit the concrete. Better that one than my 70-200 f/2.8! It's not hard to drop some coin on glass and become a snob. The thrifty fifty can take some great images in the proper hands, but because it's beginner-priced, some will be disappointed with its focus accuracy in low-contrast conditions (dark) and its limited field of view on 1.6x crop DSLRs.
