7D or 5D MKII? - 06-19-2010, 09:07 AM

I'm upgrading equipment and need some input.
Trying to decide on the 7D or 5D MKII.
Semi understand the 1.6 sensor vs. the full frame.
I like to shoot Glamour, Portrait, landscapes, wildlife, to sports (tennis, soccer, etc.)

At the same time I'll be buying a lens or two depending which body I end up with.
I have a 50 f1.8
I'd like to get the 24-70 f2.8 or the 24-105 f4 IS
next would be the 70-200 2.8 IS
17-40 f4 or 16-35 f2.8

I know it's alot to chew but any and all input is welcome.

Thanks

My suggestion is stick with the 50D you have, If you must get a new camera then get the 7D, the reason I say that is you mentioned sports and the 5Dmkii will not be a good sports camera at all. The 7D will be much better.

You would need to fully understand the FF versus Crop sensor before you can decide on lenses. I am happy as a clam with the wide end of my 24-105 on the 5D (its about the same as 16mm on a crop body)

Love my 7D. If a 5D Mk III ever comes out with full frame but 7D features, we might be on to something...

I am very interested in this topic... it is something that I have been mulling over the past couple weeks.

Is there a big functional difference in the 2 cameras that makes one a better sports camera over the other with the exception of the FPS?

It's not just he FPS but the AF system on the 7D is much more advanced and offers better options. I really like the 5D Mk II, but which it had the 7D AF system. That's why I'm hoping for a Mk III! Also, the crop sensor of the 7D give you better reach with comparable lenses.

7D

Purchased one 2 weeks ago and couldn't be happier. The AF is un real. Lights the glass up. Very easy to understand and operate as well. I would start buying glass ASAP though. I got the body and now need to upgrade lenses. Best of luck

Not enough information to give you an informed decision.

aside for the 50, what other glass do you have? I would go for a 300 f/2.8 before I upgraded the body. I would go for a 70-200 before I upgraded the body, I would go for a 24-70 before I upgraded the body, and I would go for the 16-35 before I upgraded the body.

If money is not an object then I would go with the 1D Mk IV

If money is a consideration, then I would not upgrade the camera body.

You will gain nothing but lighter pockets if you upgrade bodies before you add the glass that you want.

Dobick/Kent has VERY sound advice. If you are love photography and shoot more as a hobby, then get better glass first. The 50d is a great camera for a non-professional.

The 7d and 5dMark II are used for different reasons.

5dMark II - excellent professional camera for portrait and landscape camera, great at low light, full frame to capture the entire range of your lens, #1 camera for weddings/bridals/portraits

7d - mid range camera for action, sports, wildlife. The crop sensor allows your lenses to get closer with the same lens. So the field of view of 200mm lens is now 320mm.

If you were making money shooting all of that type of photography, you would eventually buy both of those camera and all of the the lenses listed. This would allow you to use the right tool for the job.

Buy glass... it will absolutely change the way your 50d looks.

Thanks for everyone's input.
I have already sold my camera, so body is a must have.
From everyone's input, and type of shooting I like to do the most I'm going with the 7D.
I've saved enough money I can get a 70-200 f2.8 IS and one other lens.
I'm thinking the 24-70 f2.8
After that the 17-35 f2.8
then?

Good choice with the 7D - I am very happy with mine (I was also happy with my 50D but upgraded to the 7D for various reasons, not least among them was the HD video capability which is FANTASTIC by the way). Good choice on glass, as well. I don't have to tell you that the 70-200 and 24-70L are both extremely solid lenses and you'll be happy with them. Where you go (glass-wise) after that depends on your style of shooting. You have most focal lengths covered with the lenses you listed above, unless you want to go longer than 200mm...

ETA: You could also go Macro. I've used (but don't own personally) the 100mm 2.8 Macro and it's a nice lens. Adding macro to your arsenal might be nice for some of your wildlife shots.

7d with 24-200 at 2.8 is a very solid combination.

wildlife and sports will really make you want to consider something in the 300 or longer range. I would seriously start considering saving up for a 300 f/2.8. The quality that comes out of that thing is scary.

regardless of what camera you put the 300 on, it will get stellar results. The image quality from that glass is unbelievable until you see it with your own eyes from shots that you have taken and can compare to other lenses.

You could always rent it. I'm a big advocate of trying before you buy :) Not that you don't already know it's a great lens, but if I'm planning on spending multiple thousands of dollars on glass, I make a point to try it out for a week or 2 beforehand, just to make sure it can take everything I'll be throwing at it.
