Lightbulb Which camera for landscape and night pics? - 07-12-2010, 10:34 PM

I can't decided on which camera to get between the Cannon EOS 500D and Nikon D5000? I have read reviews on both of them and they seem like really good cameras. The reviews I have read have put the nikon at a slight advantage with being better in low light, but the cannon can take landscape pictures a little bit better.

I have used my dads Nikon before and the set-up seems logical and the camera feels good in my hands. Some of the reviews also said there is no real difference they are pretty much the same so go with the one that feels the best.

I want to take Landscape and Moon/Star pictures with this camera.

That being said, I am stuck between these two cameras. This would be my first DSLR too.

Any suggestions/advice would be helpful. Thanks!

Which ever one you get.....I would go with either the Sigma 10-20 f3.5 or the Tokina 11-16 f2.8...lenses...I have been really happy with these two lenses...

If your dad has a nikon, then I would say go with the nikon as you will possibly have the opportunity to borrow some of his glass should you need it. As far as the night pictures -- night pictures does not equal low light. Most night scenes that I have seen are fairly static, meaning there is no real difference in the photograph if you shoot it a 4 second exposure or shoot an 8 second exposure, so the ISO is less likely to come into play.

Like I said -- go with the system that you have the most access to additional items that you don't have to pay for early on.

My gut feeling is Nikon almost, because they have the older "more mechanical" mount which seems suitable for mounting to telescopes but that's a pretty unfounded and unsupported opinion. That being said, I'm sure there are plenty of t-scope mounts for Canon EF too.

*Canons are for making landscape pictures. Cannons, are for destroying the landscape.
