Quality "one body" camera? - 07-13-2010, 10:14 PM

I've been shooting with a FujiFilms9000 for about 4 years now. I bought it because I believe it takes pretty good quality photos.. and I don't have to buy another lens for it... but it's pretty old and getting beat up.

Hoping someone would have a suggestion for me.

I primarily shoot live music (so quality in low light is really important) and would like something I can zoom in fairly close with.

Really don't want a camera with detachable lens.

Looking for something in the $500 or less range.
Anyone have a suggestion?

I have no allegiance to brand... FujiFilm is just what I've shot for about 10 years... because it was what I knew.

Well, low noise in low-light is a pretty tough one with point and shoot camera... There are bunches of pro's who are happy with the quality from the Canon G series (I think they're on G11 right now), has the option to add small screw-on lenses for more reach or a wider angle.

Ditto on the G11. It even has a hot shoe for a real flash. Runs @ $450.

Amazon.com: Canon PowerShot G11 10MP Digital Camera with 5x Wide Angle Optical Stabilized Zoom and 2.8-inch articulating LCD: Electronics

This is the most popular P&S for DSLR shooters...

if you have had your current camera for 4+ years, then pretty much everything you can get will be better in low-light/high ISO situations.

instead of saying "don't have to" buy another lens you should say "can't buy another lens."

If the lens on the non-interchangable stops performing the way that you need it to (ie find your self in a situation that can't be photographed with that equipment due to physical limitations) you will not have any other options but to buy a complete new rig/new camera.
Not saying that you should definitely buy a system with interchangable lenses, but I would not rule them out entirely.

There are a ton of systems out in the world today that will perform brilliantly in low light, but unfortunately small sensor cameras aren't really among them.

Nevermind -- I'll take care of it myself!
