    Wireless Tethering to iPad

Has anyone here successfully gotten this to work?
Jesse Rosten – Wireless DSLR Tethering to iPad

I'd like to be able to send images from my D700 to my ipad, but I'd be connecting over a public wifi and wondering if I'll be able to setup the eye-fi card without direct access to the router.

I'm assuming the router is in play because it's providing the DHCP service where it assigns unique IP's to the devices. With that said, if you can statically assign IP's to your ipad and body along with the same subnet, it should work....

Sounds pretty cool ... might have to look into investing into an iPad in the future.

I have it working. You do not need access to a Wi-Fi network to transfer images if you use the Eye-Fi card. I think you need Internet access to set up the Eye-Fi card, but I'm not really sure. I'm using a Canon 5D Mark II and a 1DS Mark III in addition to a couple of P&S; I don't see any difference with Nikon's.

Instructions on how to set it up can be found at: ShutterSnitch App - Frequently Asked Questions.

For my own future knowledge ... you stick in a Eye-Fi card ... set it up via internet.

Plug into a camera and shoot away?

Do the photos have to be in JPEG? OR if you shoot RAW+JPEG, does it only wirelessly send the JPEG or both? I bet that takes a moment in RAW format, if it indeed sends RAW.

Once downloaded to your iPad, is it downconverted or does it keep its original Meta Data and quality?

    Just wondering.

You need an App called ShuterSnitch for the iPad. The Eye-Fi card needs to be set up and you need to transfer at least one image to your computer so you can get a code string from the computer to set up ShuterSnitch on the iPad.

When set up, you run the app on the iPad and it becomes a server; as you shoot, the Eye-Fi card will find the server and transmit the images to it. The images are displayed on the iPad.

JPEG is what I use, but the latest Eye-Fi card will also transmit RAW. The iPad will display RAW format, but I'm not sure about ShuterSnitch. I shoot RAW + JPEG and have the iPad display the JPEG. Images are recorded to the cards and I use the RAW for post processing. I'm not sure about the Meta Data for the iPad images.

rbalcom, that article I posted above mentions using an older eye-fi, not the x2 version.
Is this what you are doing or do you have the x2?

I am using the older 4GB version, but since the iPad Wi-Fi is 802.11a/b/g/n, I don't see any hardware limitation to keep it from working with the x2 (802.11n) cards.

The new Eye-Fi Pro (8GB) does transfer RAW files. From what I've heard, though, is that if you're transferring RAW files that are really big, there might be a bit of a delay in them getting to your device, or are firing the shutter quickly. In the case of a dual-slot camera, I was thinking I might put RAW files on the CF card and transmit the JPEG versions via the WiFi.

Also, as far as I know, Eye-Fi makes only SDHC cards and not CF cards, and aren't designed to work with SD-into-CF adaptors. Eye-Fi has a compatibility chart on its Web site as well, as some cameras (to my parents' chagrin, Pentax isn't compatible) won't work.

I use a SD to CF adapter in my 5D Mark II. It works fine. By using the original or classic Eye-Fi card, I can shoot RAW + JPEG and it only transfers the JPEGs to the iPad. There is a little delay that would vary based on file size. The SD to CF adapter I use is:

That is one really cool flash drive....thanks for posting the link.

They are currently sold out and I can see why they are - the concept looks great.

Ya, but from what i can tell you have to take the card out of the camera and stick it in this thing, correct? If so, that won't work for me. Neat, just not what I'm looking for. I want to see each photo as I take it.

Crap, I ordered the X2. Transferring just a low res jpg would be great since it's faster. I wonder what will happen with the X2 if the camera is set to take raw+jpg?
