+1 on that. Bryan Peterson's book,
Understanding Exposure, is a great, non-technical book that will give you a solid understanding of how to use your camera settings to consistently get the results you want. I recommend it to everyone starting out. It will be a book you read more than once as you learn.
Beyond that, get out and practice. Pick something you want to work on and ask for critique. That's how we all learn.
