Tamron 90mm macro on a D90: No AF!? - 08-14-2010, 11:19 AM

I got this Tamron 90mm SP Di macro. I use it on my Nikon D90.

I've had it three weeks. Last night I was using the lens at Crazy Frogs Saloon on the local band Soa. Everything was going great until the AF stopped functioning. I was switching between MF and AF. I'm aware of the stripping gears, so I'm very careful. Now, when I try to AF, the camera beeps twice, and nothing happens. The AF motor in the D90 does not move. There's no error type message on the info screen. It just beeps twice, and nothing. I also can't get it into MF anymore. I saw one post on another forum that the AE-L/AF-L button, when its NOT set for AF-L, can cause it not to focus. So I went in, changed it to AE-L, and still, just beeps and nothing happens. I got frustrated, reset the camera to default settings, and still just beeps at me.

I'm out of ideas and Google search ain't pulling up relative information.

Help?

It's what it didn't do. It stopped autofocusing. The mechism to move it into manual focus stopped working. In other words, it became a paperweight. I just got back from Houston Camera Exchange. It seems as though the Tamron failing was fate as they just so happened to have the Sigma 105mm 2.8 macro lens at the exact same price as the Tamron. I swapped in the broken Tamron for the Sigma. No additional weightloss from my wallet. They did try the Tamron on a D300 to confirm that the lens, did indeed, fail. They were unable to get into autofocus mode.
