ARe you using a full frame or cropped sensor? Are you using 35mm or MF or LF?
35mm full frame optimum is a 110mm-old school- same goes for 1 day to 100+ years- least amount of distortion- if you hve a 3/4 crop then you can get by with an 85m or even a 70mm but any wider your not really using a portrait lens.

I know the Tamron 90mm 2.8 is great on the Nikon system, I'd imagine it gets just as good IQ in the Canon version.

A fellow photographer and friend shoots with portraits with his canon 24-70L 2.8. And it creates great results.

Very sharp and the range is great for someone who is looking for a good lens doesn't want to move around to much (let the zoom feature help you out here).

I recommend the 24-70mm. I use that same range on my Nikon for portraits.

To save a bit of money, (since you are on a cropped sensor) there is also the nifty 50mm (1.8 or 1.4) or the Canon 35 F/2.0. These are under 400 Bucks.

Good luck finding the right lens for your need.

There's also the Tamron 28-75 2.8 if you are looking for a short tele that will give good results for portraits. Maybe not quite as good as the Canon 24-70 2.8 but pretty close at 1/3 to 1/4 the price.

I must admit, as a recent first time visitor to this site, I was somewhat taken back by what I considered rude and insulting comments by self proclaimed camera boy and site pliceman, Thomas Campbell.

Then----I read his advertizing links and it all became clear----

"Aggie---photographer"

"Self-proclaimed camera boy and site pliceman?"

Seriously?

Yeah, I am an Aggie, and apparently also smart enough to not suggest a lens that won't autofocus with the OP's camera.

I'm also man enough to admit when I am wrong instead of trying to insult someone just because I made an honest and common mistake.

I like the 85mm f/1.2 for portraits. The f/1.8 version is a good also.
The 135 f/2L is fantastic, but you need more working room to use it obviously, so I prefer the 85mm.

Hmmm I'd be carefully about getting all uppity with one of the most knowledgable and respected members on the board EDIT: [with any member of the board.] Thomas tells it like it is, sure, but what he's saying is usually what needs to be heard. Any advice he's ever given me has been thorough and to the point and has always resulted in me improving my photos. Shot the same Astros game with him a couple of weeks ago (sorry I didn't introduce myself Thomas, I was pretty annoyed at my inability to get anything beyond a generic stock image that game) and he's a talented photog and a professional so I don't really think the "camera boy" comment is logical or applicable.
Just suck it up and move on and enjoy being part of an awesome community.

Oh and at the OP, you might check out the 85mm 1.8, fantastic bokeh with that lens
