Suggestions for Puerto Rico - 08-24-2010, 03:51 PM

Just thought I would throw this out there. I'm heading to San Juan for a few days at the end of October and was seeing if anyone here has been there and can recommend spots to take pics at. It'll be a group going and most of the time at the pool and beach but there will also be time to roam around the city.

Also any suggestions on which lens i should take? I'm thinking the 28-135 and UWA to make it lighter to walk around.

Old town San Juan is full of great places to take pictures. A lot of the buildings are painted in bright pastels. The old fort has many places for good shots. Have fun! I hope you miss the hurricanes.

Small fast prime too (50/1.8) for DOF/lowlight. Rarely takes up too much room and rather waste a few caps worth of space than not have an option in a pinch.

Get out on the island.

I lived in Ponce for 2-years and the sights are not in San Juan.

Aracibo- The famous radio telescope is an awesome site.
El Junque - Fabulous rain forest.
Ponce - The old fire station is a site to see.

From Ponce you can drive north on Hwy 10. The will blow your mind and also take you to Aracibo for your return drive to San Juan.

Many more sites to see away from the tourist areas of San Juan.

It's on 35 miles, but 2 1/2 hours is a common time for the drive.
If you get stuck behind a sugar cane truck, that goes down the drain.
No place to pass. Period!

Maybe you'll have time to take a tour of the Bacardi factory. Just a ferry ride across the bay from San Juan.

A lot of Puerto Ricans don't care for Bacardi because it is a Cuban recipe. My favorite rum ther was Don Q oro or Ron del Barrilito.

Buen Viaje

If you have off-time then hire a taxi to take you through parts of the interior.
Just one full day will take you to many spots like El Junque (Rain Forest).

Old San Juan is pretty nice and will give you a good feel of the flavors of Puerto Rico. But, as in any city/town take precautions and walk in groups for safety.

It's a beautiful island with beautiful people (most speak English).

yeah i really wish that i had more free time. i'm going there for a friend's bachelor/bachelorette trip (they didn't want to do separate ones and get crazy) and this would have been a perfect setting for me to practice some engagement photos on. maybe i can persuade them lol

I, too, am going to Puerto Rico in October (no firm date yet). I visited in 2006 and here's link to some of the photos I took at the time. As you can see all those places mentioned are represented (Except Arecibo).
