Sandisk 8GB CF cards - differing capacity - 09-02-2010, 12:16 PM

I've been using several Sandisk 8GB Extreme III CF cards for a while now. I'm scheduled for a trip to the upcoming Reno Air Races. I figured I'd need another card for that event, so I ordered on one the newer Sandisk Extreme 60MB/s cards.

Now for the interesting part - the capacity of the cards is slightly different!

In my card reader under OS X, the new card shows a size of 8.01GB, while the older cards show 8.19GB. In my D300, the "shots remaining" on an empty card is 385 on the new card, vs 394 on the older cards.

Weird! Anyone else notice this?

OS X is mad cause you bought new cards.... no really, must be a difference in the memory chips being used for the two cards.

Computer stuff-never quite what you expect. Same is true of disk storage. Actual never equals advertized.

Yeah I know that "Actual never equals advertised", because of the whole 1024 vs 1000 bytes issue. I'd still expect similar devices by the same manufacturer to have the same actual capacity.

Not a big deal, really. I was just surprised.
