It's an electronic device, if it can fail.... it will & at the most inopportune time. That being said, will you be using it for your sole back-up? Temporary storage? Drive expansion? For the right price it's a good drive... how ou use it will determine whether or not it fits your needs.

Not sure about this brand but I've had good luck with both Western Digital an LaCie portable drives.

It's hard to say so I'll put it this way:

I have not yet heard of a Lacie Rugged drive (the ones with the orange rubber casing) fail and a number of people swear by them. But, I have seen the lower-end Western Digital drives take a mild beating also so...grain of salt. However, as previously mentioned, all drives (desktop or portable) are likely to fail at some point and moving them around from place to place doesn't help the situation. Portable drives should only be considered as a temporary solution, backups should be made to other places too.

If it were up to me and cash were not an issue, I would look towards solid state drive options, as they are less likely to fail due to a reduction of moving parts. OWC (macsales.com) has a 480GB at $1600 IIRC.
