camera decsions.. - 09-13-2010, 04:27 PM

Have: 5D and 50 D..lense 70-200 2.8, 24-70 2.8, 85 1.2, 50 ??,

I want to get a new camera that will do a little better on low light indoor sports. But the little bread and butter I get is from portraits..so I can't compromise there...I was going to get the 5D II reconditiond, but it doesn't look like they are offering that anymore. I don't want to pay more than $2500.

So what would you do?

5D2's autofocus would kinda suck for sports. 7D or a used 1D mark III would be your best bet. But for portraits, the 5D2 kills both of those.

I totally agree. You don't get a good sport AND portrait camera for $2500. :(

Your best bet is to go with a Nikon D3S as well as double your budget :D

A 5D2 and 7D make good complimentary cameras.

Whats your credit card number???

what's the biggest downfall with the 5d II and sports? the continuous burst?

whoops..Thomas said it...auto focus..is it just too slow? slower than the 5 d?

OK, so the 7D may not be the perfect portrait camera, but.....come on. Put 2 prints side by side, and at what point can you really tell a difference? Is the color, toanl range or noise really THAT much different? Especially for the mainstram customer?
Yes Mr Client, I get 500.00 for an 8X10 because of the camera I use.

The depth of field is instantly noticeable.

You already have a 5D. Add a 7D and sell your 50D. Use the 5D for portraits and the 7D for sports. Problem solved.

Thomas, are you telling me 2.8 looks different based on the camera? Assuming the crop factor distance to subject and BG is taken into account? I really dont know, I havent shot FF, so it is a question?

Absolutely.

So the three factors in depth of field are:
Focal Length
Distance to the subject
Aperture.

To get the same framing of a picture, you need to be farther away with a crop camera OR use a shorter focal length. Either choice gives you a deeper DOF.

If you put both cameras on a tripod and shoot the same subject at the same distance with the same focal length and aperture, then crop in the FF camera to match the 1.6x, you will have the same image. But if you use a longer lens or get closer to your subject (which the FF allows you to do), you will achieve a shallower DOF, which is generally pleasing on a portrait.

my advice on the best bang for the buck -- sell the 50d and get a 7d...

If you can get a 7d through the refurb process, go for it.

That way when in low light you can use the 7d (ie a gym) and when doing the portrait stuff you can use your 5d.

Other than the sports stuff are you happy with the original 5d? If yes, then no real need to upgrade that.

Nevermind -- I'll take care of it myself!
