Print size vs sensor size - 09-14-2010, 09:00 PM

i've looked at several megapixel charts but still not clear on what the print size difference will be between the DX format on a Nikon and the FX format. I'm looking to upgrade from the D300 to the D700 but the "image size" listed by Nikon for both are 4288 x 2848 even though the sensor size is larger on the D700.

Sensor size vs. pixel count are totally independent... Within the same generation of cameras/sensors, you want the lowest pixel density (pixels per area), since high pixel density accounts for more noise.

Printing vs. Pixelcount is also a subjective thing. Design215 megapixels comparison and maximum print size charts gives a basic idea. You may be able to print a bit bigger photos with the full frame sensor because your photo comes with less noise (compared to the same resolution photo with higher noise on a smaller sensor which may look not as good that large).

Like Janitha said, pixel count is independant of sensor size. Both are 12MP so the resolution will be pretty darn close if not identical. The advantage of the D700 would be higher quality pixels in theory, which may allow larger prints without degredation.

Its a bit more complex and subjective at the same time than both previous posters say.
Thats not meant to be double toothed but then digital photo is often double toothed.

A good way to characterize sensor performance is thru the figure of merit calcuations in the following technical write up ...
Clarkvision: Digital Camera Sensor Performance Summary

Note - there is a ton of info in this and you might want to take it slow and easy.
Also - I understand Clarks math and assumptions to be sound - photo engineer speaking.
