The Canon EF-S 17-55 2.8 IS zoom is a good lens, but not cheap. What is the 28-135 not giving you that you'd like to see? Do you want to be able to shoot in available light hand-held, is the lens not sharp enough, or do you need a wider angle to capture more of the scene? If any of these is the case then I think you'd like the Canon's 17-55.
The Tamron 17-50 is said to be very good too, but I have never used it myself.

The 28-135 is so big and I miss a lot when in a smaller room. I was wanting a smaller lens that will take crisp pictures

if the 28-135 is too big, then you probably aren't going to be too happy with a 17-40 or the 16-35.

Your money may be better spent on a speedlight and use it to bounce on a wall behind you with your current lens.

If by "big" you are meaning that it is does not have a wide enough angle of view, then there are several options for your 50d.

At this point though, I am going to recommend working on technique to get crisp pictures, instead of throwing money at a problem that you might not have

Go to the SLR Lens Sample Galleries and check out the photos from the various lens makers. If you have a local camera store in your area, they usually will let you try out a lens in the store. I only have one non canon lens and that is the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8. They have two models, one with, and on without their VR system. I have the one wihout the VR system and it is a good lens.

Good luck on your choice..............
